What is leather recoloring?
Recoloring is the process of restoring color to faded or worn leather with professional leather dyes and pigments, then sealing it with a new topcoat. It refreshes the look without replacing the leather.
Can all leather be recolored?
Most pigmented, or finished, leather recolors very well. Aniline and nubuck leather absorb color differently and need a different approach, so we test the leather first. We will explain what result to expect on your piece.
Can you change the color of my leather sofa?
Yes. Going darker is usually easiest, such as tan to brown or gray to black. Going much lighter is harder and may not be possible on every piece, so we will advise you honestly.
Will the new color rub off?
No. When the leather is cleaned and prepared correctly and sealed with a quality topcoat, the color bonds to the surface and does not rub off onto clothing. Avoid harsh cleaners to keep the finish in good shape.
Will recoloring make the leather feel stiff?
We use thin, flexible coats made for furniture leather, so the leather keeps its soft feel and natural grain. It should not feel painted or plastic.
How long does recolored leather last?
With normal use and basic care, a professional recolor can last for many years. High-wear areas like seat cushions and arms may need a touch-up over time.
Can you recolor just one area?
Yes. We can recolor only the faded or worn areas, such as arms or seat fronts, and blend them into the existing color of the piece.
Do you recolor car seats?
Yes. We recolor genuine leather car seats, side bolsters, and steering wheels, as well as driver seats with heavy wear.
How long does recoloring take?
A chair or small area usually takes a few hours. A full sofa or sectional may take a full day, depending on size and color change. Furniture can usually be used again after 24 hours.
